The Story: Mark Trumbo finished third in the 2012 Home Run Derby.
The Monkey Says: For a first time participant, that’s pretty good, especially since he had a shot at making the finals but lost in a tie-breaker to Jose Bautista. Frankly, I think that the goal for a young player in the Derby is just to not get skunked. Oops! Sorry, Robinson Cano, didn’t see you standing there. Didn’t mean any offense.
The Story: Mike Trout was the center of attention at the All-Star Game press event.
The Monkey Says: As has become routine, the other Angels at the ASG fielded a lot of Trout-related questions. As for Mike himself, I saw some pictures from his media sessions and he looked like, well, like a giddy 20-year old that made the MLB All-Star team. His youthful enthusiasm was practically palpable.
The Story: Albert Pujols was voted by his peers as the fifth most overrated position player in MLB.
The Monkey Says: This is the same poll that called C.J. Wilson the most overrated pitcher, so this might be old news and I just missed it. Heck, I may have even linked to it before and forgot but I don’t care because the All-Star break is the worst time of year for daily links so I’ve got to use whatever I can get my hands on.
The Story: Appreciating Andrew McCutchen and Mike Trout.
The Monkey Says: This article is more about McCutchen, but like I said, slow news day. Also, McCutchen is one of my favorite non-Angels, so there’s that too.
The Story: A look at the “easy” power of Mark Trumbo.
The Monkey Says: I link to this mainly for the map of the balls Trumbo has taken deep because it shows just how scary Trumbo can be as he can crush a ball thrown just about anywhere and doesn’t just feast off mistakes in a certain location like some other hitters do. Now I understand why he used to be so swing happy. In the minors, he could get away with that and still murder baseballs because the pitchers weren’t as talented.
