Halo Headlines: Wells not likely to be traded, could Luis Jimenez be a breakout candidate?

The January 24th, 2013 edition of daily news for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim including Wells not likely to be traded, wondering if Luis Jimenez could be a breakout candidate and much more…

The Story: Thanks to Delmon Young signing in Philadelphia, it now appears "likely" that Vernon Wells will not be traded before Opening Day.

The Monkey Says: Delmon Young just ruins everything.  I can't say that this is a huge surprise, but it is still disappointing if only because Wells needs a fresh start and I still worry about Scioscia being tempted to use Wells over Bourjos the first time Petey goes into a slump.

The Story: Could 3B prospect Luis Jimenez buck his scouting profile and breakout as a quality big leaguer?

The Monkey Says: It is more of a hunch than any real educated analysis.  One thing I will give Luis credit for is that even though he is a free-swinger, he actually makes a lot of contact and doesn't strike out much, so there could be a little more something there because we have seen players in the past succeed even though they don't draw walks by compensating for it by just being able to make good contact with everything.  I'm not sure Lucho is one of those guys, but I'd sure like to see him get some kind of a chance at the bigs this season.

The Story: A look at the Angels outfield depth chart heading into the season.

The Monkey Says: Ah, the much overlooked Scott Cousins suggestion.  He's been passed around this off-season, but teams do like him and I can't help but wonder if he won't beat out Calhoun for the final OF spot if only so Calhoun can get regular playing time in Salt Lake.  Trent Oeltjen might have an outside shot too as he is also left-handed with a bit of pop and speed, though I am pretty sure that the Rich Thompson era taught us that Mike Scioscia has little tolerance for Australians.  There's J.B Shuck too who has a strong case merely because his name is J.B. Shuck.

The Story: Angels AGM Scott Servais and new Arkansas manager Tim Bogar will be speakers at an upcoming event for the Travs.

The Monkey Says: Someone needs to attend this and ask Servais how well he and Scioscia are getting along.
