The LA Galaxy announced earlier today that they will be competing in this summer’s International Champions Cup. Other teams in the competition are Manchester United, FC Porto, FC Barcelona, ACF Florentina, Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea FC, Club America, New York Red Bulls, and the San Jose Earquakes.

“The Galaxy are honored to once again be a representative of Major League Soccer against the world’s top teams in the International Champions Cup,” said LA Galaxy President Chris Klein in a statement. “This is the most storied and successful club in MLS and competing in this tournament gives our fans an opportunity to see the Galaxy face the most successful clubs from other leagues around the world. We are looking forward to continuing the tradition of bringing global soccer to Southern California this summer.”

The competition will take place from July 11th – August 5th in various destinations across America and will lie right in the middle of the MLS season. This means there might be a few MLS games that will have to be rescheduled and/or ICC games being played in the middle of the week.

One opponent the Galaxy are rumored to play against are FC Barcelona at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, CA. FC Barcelona hasn’t played in the United States in a quite a while so this will no doubt bring a lot of Barcelona fans out.

However, there are Galaxy fans who think this “cash grab” game isn’t necessary as it will add unecessary games leading to schedule congestion and chances of injuries. And if Steven Gerrard will be ready for the LA Galaxy at that time, then it will just lead to more interesting games especially if they are against Chelsea or Manchester United.

LA previously participated in the ICC back in 2013 where they finished fourth and was highlighted in a 3-1 win against Juventus at Dodgers Stadium.
