The effects of the Jared Goff trade start now for the Los Angeles Rams.
In an analysis of draft capital—the weighted value associated with each team’s total number of draft picks and the position of those picks, the Rams ranked last on two separate calculations, according to CBSSports.com.
Two trade-value charts, one former Dallas Cowboys and Miami Dolphins coach Jimmy Johnson developed (which many teams still use) and one Chase Stuart at Football Perspective created that other NFL teams use, formed the basis of the CBSSports.com report.
L.A.’s NFC representative actually graded just ahead of the Minnesota Vikings on the Johnson scale but farther behind on the Stuart scales, which saddled the Rams in last place. And that’s including the fact that the team is tied for eighth—tied with six other teams—in actual draft selections with eight picks.
“The Rams finish last in available capital thanks to last year’s trade up to No. 1 overall to select Jared Goff,” CBSSports.com wrote of the Los Angeles quarterback.
The Eagles, who traded up to get QB Carson Wentz, still managed to rank as the No. 10 team with the most capital to spend.
The reason? Philadelphia was able to ship QB Sam Bradford to the Vikings for a 2017 first-round pick. The moved helped drop the Vikings to just above the Rams in the rankings.
But that means that Bradford had an effect on the bottom two teams in the draft-capital analysis. After all, the Rams wouldn’t have had to move up to take Goff last year had Bradford, the St. Louis Rams’ No. 1 overall pick in 2010, panned out and still been on the team.
