The 2016 NFL Draft is just a few weeks away, and the first blockbuster trade has been completed. The Tennessee Titans and Los Angeles Rams have agreed to a deal, giving the latter the first overall pick in this year’s draft according to ESPN.
Tennessee, who drafted quarterback Marcus Mariota number-two overall in last year’s draft, secured the first pick in this year’s draft. Many speculated that teams would try to throw everything they could at the Titans to get this year’s first overall pick, and the Rams have done just that.
The details of the draft are as follows:
Los Angeles Rams get: First-round pick (first overall), fourth-round pick (113th overall), sixth-round pick (177th overall)
Tennessee Titans get: First-round pick (15th overall), two second-round picks (43rd and 45th overall), third-round pick (76th overall), 2017 first and third-round picks from Rams
There’s almost no question that the driving force behind the decision was for the Rams to get their hands on their franchise quarterback. The Rams and Philadelphia Eagles made a trade at the beginning of free-agency last season, swapping quarterbacks Sam Bradford and Nick Foles. While Bradford found some success after a rocky start in Philadelphia, Foles eventually found himself on the bench after a less-than-impressive performance.
The feeling now is that former North Dakota State quarterback Carson Wentz will be the first to walk across the stage when the draft begins. Wentz was projected in many mock drafts as the first quarterback to be taken. Now that the team holding the number one pick is desperate for a new offensive leader, this trade all but confirms how the first pick will be used.
