The Sox took on the Rockies in the second and final game of the series with John Lackey on the mound. Lackey has been impressive this season and with Clay Buchholz on the shelf he is without a doubt the best pitcher in the Sox rotation right now. Lackey would continue his strong season in today's start striking out 12 batters in his outing.
Lackey gave up a single run in the 1st when Rosario hit an RBI single to score Gonzalez. Sox 0-1. Fortunately the Sox bats would immediately give Lackey the lead back and he would never give it back. In the bottom of the 1st the Sox scored 3 runs by way of an RBI single from Victorino, an RBI double from Ortiz and an RBI single from Nava. Sox 3-1. In the 3rd the Sox added two more runs with an RBI single from Napoli and a sac fly from Nava. Sox 5-1. In the 6th Lackey gave up a solo HR to Michael Cuddyer to have the Sox leading 5-2. Lackey also gave up a double and a single in the 6th inning, but was able to limit the damage on the scoreboard to only the solo HR. Lackey pitched through 7 innings and looked impressive. Lackey's pitching line for the night was 98 pitches, 7 IP, 8 H, 2 R, 0 BB and 12 (you heard me I said TWELVE) Ks.
Tazawa took the mound in the 8th and just like Lackey he gave up a solo HR to Michael Cuddyer. The Sox were now clinging to a 5-3 lead. The Sox went scoreless in the bottom of the 8th and then Koji Uehara took the mound for the first time as the official closer. Uehara had himself a 1-2-3 inning and got his 2nd save of the season.
