Lance Lynn Out For 2016 Season – Thomas John Strikes Again

5

Lance has undergone Tommy John surgery and will miss the 2016 MLB season.

This. Sucks.

Lynn has been the workhorse of the St. Louis Cardinals pitching staff the past 3 seasons, recording 30 or more starts in each. He has 60 wins since 2012 and according to CBS, that trails only Max Scherzer (69), Clayton Kershaw (67), Zack Greinke (66), Madison Bumgarner (65) and David Price (63) in the majors.

Lynn has (had) a very favorable contract for the team, only scheduled to earn 7.5M in 2016. He’s under terms for 2017 for the same amount. A multi-year, cost-controlled, experienced pitcher is a valuable piece of any MLB team.

It’s not even Thanksgiving and the injuries are starting to effect the 2016 Cardinals.

The silver lining?

1) The Cardinals aren’t getting this news in March. Lynn should be able to make a full recovery and have a normal off-season between ’16-’17.

2) The free agent market is still wide open. How’s this strike you? Either/or? Both?

3) There’s a real chance that Lackey might be back now. Losing a combined 393 innings (218 Lackey | Lynn 175.1) in one off-season would be tough to swallow.

4) The youngsters know it’s WIIIIIDE open for that 5th starters spot. Marco – Tim – Tyler… I’m sure you guys are wrapping up your postseason vacations and planning out your off-season training regiments. Here’s some more motivation.

This is the point where we should probably wish Mr. Lynn well on his recovery. Dude has been a big part of the Cardinals success the past few years as he’s transitioned from a fireballing reliever to a reliable starter.

Get well soon. Hope to see you around your teammates as much as you can be this summer.
