Larry Bowa played twelve seasons with the Phillies in his major league career. He was also their manager from 2001 to 2004, so he is familiar with the organization. He is also very good friends with the manager of the Phillies, Ryne Sandberg.
Two weeks ago when the season ended for the Phillies, Sandberg said that putting together a coaching staff was his first order of business. It appears like he is sticking to his word. People close to Sandberg have said that he wanted to bring Bowa in as a member of the Phillies’ coaching staff, and his wish has been granted.
The last time that Larry Bowa coached a major league team, was in 2010 with the Dodgers. After his reign in Los Angeles was over, he went on to be an analyst for MLB Network.
