There were only a few head coaching vacancies that former Packers head coach Mike McCarthy was set on pursuing, and by Tuesday afternoon, it was down to one.
McCarthy was very much interested in the Jets job, and the potential fit made a lot of sense on paper, with quarterback Sam Darnold looking to make strides in his development during his sophomore campaign and beyond. It was said that it was the only remaining job that he was interested in, and McCarthy seemed to be the favorite to land it.
But for whatever reason, the Jets went in a completely different direction, and actually ended up hiring former Dolphins head coach Adam Gase on Wednesday, shocking many.
And due to that move, McCarthy is staying put in 2020. This was the rumor heading into Wednesday.
Former Packers’ HC Mike McCarthy doesn’t want to be considered, and isn’t pursuing, any other HC vacancy other than the New York Jets’, per source.

Apparently, that’s exactly what the case is. McCarthy is taking the year off to prepare for 2020 and spend time with his family.
With the #Jets job off the table, Mike McCarthy told me he’s sitting out this season — and his wife and kids started cheering at dinner when he told them. “Family excited about dad at home for 2019. That’s all that matters as we both know.” He’ll prepare and be ready for 2020.

Well, his daughters sure appear to be the real winners here. As for his future, he’ll be one of the frontrunners once the head coaching carousel picks up in roughly one year from now, and a year off to study up on how to be a bit more innovative on offense might help him become an even more attractive candidate for NFL teams to consider going forward.
