Per Bob McKenzie on TSN:
“Believe it or not, the Toronto Maple Leafs did inquire about the availability of Jason Spezza from the Ottawa Senators. Not because the Toronto Maple Leafs want Jason Spezza in their lineup per se, but they were maybe looking at the possibility of bringing him in, parlaying him, flipping him quickly to somebody else as part of another transaction. But, the Battle of Ontario does not allow Ottawa GM Bryan Murray to make deals with the Toronto Maple Leafs, so that is certainly not happening.
But what has happened over the last 24 hours, we have found out that the Chicago Blackhawks along with Anaheim and St. Louis – teams we knew were in the mix for Jason Spezza – well, the Blackhawks now are front and center in that, as well as Anaheim and St. Louis. Keep an eye on the Chicago Blackhawks, a lot of people in the National Hockey League right now really get the sense that Stan Bowman is trying to shake things up. And obviously they have interest in Spezza and Kesler, but it looks as though they may have interest in doing some other things as well.”
If the Toronto Maple Leafs want Jason Spezza, take them to the cleaners.
For what it’s worth, the Leafs were linked to the Blues and center Patrik Berglund. At the time, the rumoured deal involved a potential Nazem Kadri for Berglund swap, so it stands to reason that if the Leafs acquired Spezza, they would want to flip him for a package involving Berglund.
I know in the past, Eugene Melnyk has made comments about never dealing players to Toronto, but if moving Spezza in a three-way deal that nets the Senators some great assets and sees Spezza land in St. Louis, who really gives a damn if Toronto was a player in the trade?
Leafs Also Want Milan Michalek?
According to Darren Dreger, the Leafs are interested in signing Milan Michalek, which would then free them up to move Joffrey Lupul for a draft selection.
