2010 Bucs Lookback- Blount, LeGarrette

The Bucs went into 2009 thinking Derrick Ward was going to be the savior of the running game. If not , Earnest Graham was there to take over where he left off in 2007.

Nope. It was Cadillac Williams, reborn, with new legs. Or Knees that is.

Caddy didn’t do half bad, and he was the No.1 guy going into 2010 too, only problem was he just couldn’t get it going like he used to. We can sit and think for years about the how and whys of the reason Cadillac had a 2.5 yards per carry average after the first quarter of the season, worst in the NFL for starting tailbacks. It doesn’t matter. In game three against Pittsburgh, Bucs fans got a chance to see something very exciting.  A new back emerged in our hopes, No.27 ran for 12 yards, hopping all the way at the end. Then he put it in the End Zone on fourth down, and the Bay area was talking about LeGarrett Blount.

He’s not ready. Thats what they said over and over again. He doesn’t know the pass protections and that will make Josh Freeman vulnerable. So Blount was given a few more carries each week until finally it was just to much to hold back.

Blount took the league, and the Bucs, by storm. He leapt (literally) into the spotlight with his ESPN highlight reel gallops, and finished the year with a 1,000+ yard campaign even though he didn’t start until week 7.

Blount will be back as a sophomore in 2011, and its going to be interesting to see what he can do with a full 16 game schedule.
