It’s been an interesting couple of months for Jose Canseco and his fiancée, model Leila Knight, but, because I made a promise to Knight, I won’t mention any of it directly.
Besides, if you’re one of the embattled former slugger’s more than 516,000 Twitter followers, you’ve already read and seen most of what he’s had to say.
Now it is Knight’s turn.
HOVG: Let’s jump right into this…how and when did you meet Jose Canseco? And how soon did you know he was the guy for you?
LEILA: Jose and I met one day, the next day went bowling. The day after went to dinner and a movie, and moved in together after two weeks. He wanted to be exclusive after one day. (Laughs)
HOVG: And you’ve been together how long?
LEILA: We have been together seven years.
HOVG: A lot of people would suggest that you would need to have your head examined if you even considered going on a date, much less stick around for as long as you have, so…what has kept the two of you together (albeit off and on) for so long?
LEILA: No one really knows the real Jose. The way he is portrayed in the media is so inaccurate. Yes, he has made mistakes in his life…but no one is perfect. We have had a deep, passionate love since day one…almost obsessive on both ends. Neither of us want to ever live without each other.
HOVG: Last October, Canseco famously had a gun accident at the house you shared. Did you ever fear that he’d turn one of his guns on you?
LEILA: I’m actually pretty offended by this question. Jose is a gentle giant and has no violent bone in his body. He has had some things happen with ex-wives in the past, but they are extremely twisted and portrayed in a much worse way than what really happened. He also was heavily using steroids at those times. What happened with the gun accident was a freak accident. Of course, he would never turn a gun on anyone…especially me.
HOVG: What was it like being the support system for Canseco when he was going through such public ordeals? Outside of his agent Jose Melendez, does the guy even have many friends?
LEILA: Jose has been betrayed and used by his family and friend his whole life, so I don’t blame him for being weary of getting close and trusting people. Jose does have friends, but he doesn’t like to get too personal with anyone besides me. Like I said before, no one knows the real Jose besides me. I’m with him every day and know the real genuine, sweet, and harmless person he is inside, but I will admit he makes mistakes every now and then. He genuinely regrets them after the fact. He just has a problem with reacting too quickly sometimes when he’s upset or hurt.
HOVG: Okay, let’s turn the page here. Some have referred to you as “Jose Canseco’s Ex”…but you’re not. Plus, you’re more than that…you’ve got your own career. What are you working on now?
LEILA: First off I’m not his ex. We are very much together and are planning to have a family soon. As far as my career, I have been modeling for almost ten years, have done some acting, do stunt work for a few TV shows and own a talent management company, Premiere Models and Talent, based in Los Angeles but have talent across the country. I also have a celebrity division which I have been focusing on lately.
HOVG: And how can people keep up with everything you’ve got going on?
LEILA: I couldn’t care less whether people try and keep up with us or not. What they know is completely inaccurate. Because they are bored, love the gossip and love to judge, the media loves to trash Jose.
HOVG: Lastly, would you ever date a baseball player again?
LEILA: Only Jose. I definitely have a type. Tall, athletic, handsome face and the more muscular, the better.
