The always great Wrestling Observer ran a reader poll recently that I found very interesting: What was the biggest match in MMA history? The top five are as follows:
Brock Lesnar vs. Frank Mir II (UFC 100) 35.1%
Tito Ortiz vs. Chuck Liddell II (UFC 66) 21.2%
Kazushi Sakuraba vs. Royce Gracie I (Pride Grand Prix 2000 Finals) 20.7%
Fedor Emelianenko vs. Mirko Cro Cop (Pride Final Conflict 2005) 8.1%
Anderson Silva vs. Chael Sonnen II (UFC 148) 5.9%
Can't really argue with the results – the UFC ones all were 1,000,000+ pay-per-view sellers (and rank in the top 6 top selling UFC PPVs of all-time), and the Pride ones were gigantic as well. Perhaps I'm a little surprised that Silva-Sonnen II didn't rank higher, due to the hype that fight had going into it and the fact that it should still be rather fresh in people's minds. But perhaps, like wine and cheese, great MMA fights get better with time.
The question is: if Anderson Silva and Georges St-Pierre end up fighting, does it make this list?
