The Red Sox had lost the last two games against the Orioles and were looking at a sweep unless they could get a win on Thursday night. Luckily the guy they had on the mound was Jon Lester who has won 13 straight games against the O’s. By the end of the night, it would be 14 straight games.
Lester started out shaky allowing a run to score. However, after that all he gave up was a solo HR to the Red Sox killer Vlad Guerrero. Lester pitched 8 strong innings only allowing 4 hits and 2 runs. And, the offense had his back. Jacoby Ellsbury and Adrian Gonzalez were a nice 1-2 punch for the first two RBIs. Jarrod Saltalamacchia also got a much needed RBI late in the game. Not only did it put the Sox in front, but it also was probably just what Salty needed given his struggles. Earlier in the game, the O’s IBB JD Drew to load the bases for Salty. Salty ended up taking the ball for a ride in that at bat, but it only made it to the warning track. He said after the game that having the batter walked in front of him pissed him off. Good Salty…use it for fuel.
Jacoy Ellsbury was also a ROCK STAR last night. He’s truly rocking the leadoff spot. Ells seems so comfortable right now in that spot. He went 3 for 5 on the night.
It was a great game all around…and just the win we absolutely needed. And now, after crawling out of the basement of the AL East, the Sox head home to face the Mariners. Let’s Go Red Sox!
