The Red Sox haven’t given Jon Lester much run support in the 2014 season even though he has pitched well in each outing so far. Last night it seemed like Lester might suffer the same fate, but in the 6th inning the bats finally had Lester’s back for him to get his first win.
Lester continued to pitch like the ace he is this season. Lester was up against CC Sabathia and it seemed like they were going to be in a pitcher’s duel. Sabathia hasn’t been the pitcher he once was, but he spent much of his outing in total control of the Sox lineup. Lester allowed the first run to score of the evening when he gave up a solo HR to Soriano. Sox 0-1. The game stayed 0-1 until the 6th inning. The Sox had a couple chances to score, but weren’t able to get the job done. The Sox were finally able to crack CC Sabathia in the 6th inning. Jonny Gomes tied the game with a leadoff homerun. Sox 1-1. Papi and Napoli both hit singles and then Grady Sizemore brought them home with a 3 run homerun. Sox 4-1.
Lester finally had a lead and he held onto it. Lester pitched a scoreless 6th inning and took the mound in the 7th. Lester did give up an RBI single in the 7th to Kelly Johnson and he was done for the night. Sox 4-2. Lester’s line for the night was 113 pitches, 6.2 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 BB and 6 Ks. Tazawa came in and got the final out of the 7th inning and also pitched a scoreless 8th inning. That is when a surprising thing happened. Edward Mujica got up and starting throwing to come in for the 9th. After the game Farrell said that Koji Uehara was experiencing shoulder tightness and wasn’t available. Gulp. Mujica came in and did his job. He had a 1-2-3 9th inning and got his first save with the Sox.
Red Sox 4 Yankees 2 BOXSCORE
WP: Lester (1-2) LP: Sabathia (1-2) SV: Mujica (1)
