Lester Gets His First Loss to the O’s

The Sox faced off against the O’s last night and for the first time in his career Jon Lester ended up with a loss against the Birds.  Lester had a lead for a very short period of time, but wasn’t able to hold onto it.

Lester took the mound and the bats even got him a tiny lead in the 3rd.  Pedro Ciriaco hit an RBI double to score Nava.  Sox 1-0.  Lester gave that lead right back in the 4th.   Lester gave up an RBI single to Wieters to score Hardy and Jones.  Sox 1-2.  In the 5th, the Sox tied the game when Pedey hit an RBI single to score Ciriaco.  Sox 2-2.  Lester would give the lead right back in the 6th though when he gave up an RBI double to Wieters and then an RBI single to Reynolds.  Sox 2-4.  Lester pitched 7 innings, but he left the mound looking down the barrel of a loss.  Scott Atchison came on in relief in the 8th and pitched himself a scoreless inning.  Mark Melancon pitched a scoreless 9th inning, however it wasn’t without drama.  Melancon hit Andino in the helmet with a pitch and Andino almost charged at him.  I’m not sure how anyone could think it was intentional, but it’s never a good thing when a pitch goes anywhere near someone’s head.  The Sox bats tried to rally in the 9th, but they came up short.  Nava singled and Gomez was at the plate representing the tying run.  Unfortunately, Gomez struck out to end the inning.

Game over.  Red Sox lose.
