Lester Struggles as Sox Lose 5th Straight Game

Writing losing game recap after game recap is really not my favorite part of the day. Let’s hope the Sox get it together and I can write a winning recap sometime soonish. Last night the Sox hoped that they could rally around their ace Jon Lester and put this losing streak behind them, but Lester struggled and Max Scherzer was his usual dominant self. The Sox got in a hole early and just were not able to dig themselves out.

In the 1st inning, Lester got 2 quick outs and then gave up 2 runs when he gave up an RBI double to VMart followed by an RBI single to Hunter.  Lester then gave up a 3rd run in the 2nd inning when he gave up an RBI single to Davis.  Sox 0-3.  Lester gave up a solo HR in the 3rd to Castellanos to put the Sox in the hole 0-4.  That’s not how you be a stopper for your team.

In the 4th the Sox finally got a run on the board when Dustin Pedroia hit a solo HR against Max Scherzer, however Lester gave that run right back in the bottom of the inning when he gave up a solo HR of his own to Suarez.  Sox 1-5.  In the 5th the Sox got their 2nd run when Bradley Jr hit an RBI single to score David Ross.  Sox 2-5.  Lester took the mound in the bottom of the 5th, but didn’t get to finish the inning.  With one out and giving up 2 singles, Farrell went out to get Lester in favor of Breslow.  Breslow got the double play to get out of the inning.  Lester had a pretty bizarre pitching line, especially for him: 90 pitches, 4.1 IP, 12 H, 5 R, 1 BB and 0 Ks.

In the 6th the Sox got within 2 runs when Stephen Drew got an RBI single to score Pedey.  Sox 3-5.  However the Tigers added two more runs in the bottom of the 6th when Tazawa gave up an RBI triple to Kinsler and an RBI single to Cabrera.  Sox 3-7.  Ortiz got an RBI double in the 7th and chased Scherzer from the game.  Sox 4-7.  Unfortunately Andrew Miller gave that run right back in the bottom of the 7th when Holaday hit a sac fly to score Hunter.  Sox 4-8.  Mujica did pitch a scoreless 8th inning and then the Sox made a little noise in the 9th.  The Tigers closer, Joe Nathan, has been struggling as of late and he showed some signs of that last night.  Nathan gave up 2 runs with a sac fly RBI to Pedey and an RBI groundout to Papi.  Sox 6-8.  Nathan then gave up singles to Sizemore and Nava and the go ahead run was coming to the plate.  Unfortunately with 2 outs, Stephen Drew could not be the hero and popped out to end the game.

Red Sox 6  Tigers 8  BOXSCORE

WP:  Scherzer (7-2)  LP: Lester (6-7)
