Let’s Talk About That Hazelbaker Brawl

You’ve seen the video by now, right?

Monday night, Jeremy Hazelbaker and the Memphis Redbirds were playing the New Orleans Zephyrs when this happened:

Considering the catcher was set up pretty low, pitcher Jose Urena most likely went upstairs to send a message. Probably didn’t intend to get that close to the dome of Hazelbaker… but he did.

So Hazelbaker flips his bat and immediately starts jawing while Urena gets into an orthodox boxing position.

In the video it’s tough to see, but all accounts have Hazelbaker avoiding the left hook (which would have turned him into Jose Bautista of the minors)… barely.

But he did get Ventura’d.

Jeremy prolly already knows this, but the fact that one of the best sluggers in MLB (the aforementioned Bautista) gets reduced to a meme over one punch means the paradigm has shifted.

If you’re going to do a sports fight, you better be ready to, you know, fight.

The bat flip was a nice touch, but it doesn’t mean anything if you’re going to get worked in the main event.

This is what the minors were made for – learning. Let’s hope that Jeremy not only learned a lesson, but taught one to his teammates as well.
