Oh, the power of social media.
Eric and Justin Stangel have a dream…and it’s a pretty simple one. The “Late Show with David Letterman” writers are huge baseball fans and would like, someday, to throw out the first pitch at a professional baseball game in Japan.
So they took to the internet.
It started simple enough. A blog post addressing their desire (“we’ll be a walking billboard for your team”) and a tweet for their “Japanese friends”.
For our Japanese friends… 日本の野球チームメンバーよ 私と @Justin_Stangel を、日本でのあなたのチームの始球式に参加させてくれる人は誰かな? さー、行ってみよう!

But here’s the best part, the Emmy-Award winning duo has actually garnered some interest.
“I’ve spoken to some media in Japan who think it’s doable,” Eric told ESPN’s Keith Olbermann Monday night.
According to the comedy scribes, three teams in the hunt…the Orix Buffaloes, Tokyo Yakult Swallows and Nippon-Ham Fighters. But for the Stangels, any team would be fine.
“As Jews, we have no problem dealing with the Ham Fighters,” Justin added. “We will put religion aside to fight with the Hams and throw the pitches.”
The brothers have clearly done their homework. They’ve priced out the cost (they estimate it would run 1.5 million yen or close to $15,000 to fly them to Japan) and even figured out a way to help bring their own triumph back to the States for whomever might entertain their offer.
“They would be getting a whole new area where they could sell merchandise,” Eric added. “I live in Brooklyn. Brooklyn is full of hipsters. Hipsters would die to wear Japanese baseball jerseys. You cannot buy them here.”
