The Lightning are dropping the gloves to fight cancer and you can help. When the Bolts host the Arizona Coyotes on this evening, they will also be celebrating their annual Hockey Fights Cancer night. This marks the 16th year that the NHL’s initiative will recognize those affected by cancer and the Bolts have some special things planned.
The NHL’s efforts have come to be symbolized by the color lavender. This shade represents awareness for all cancers. Lightning players will wear “Hockey Fights Cancer” decals on their helmets and will have the opportunity to use lavender tape on their sticks during Tuesday’s morning skate, warm-up, and game. Sticks from select players will be auctioned off during the game to benefit the Lightning Foundation.
Tampa’s coaches and broadcasters will offer their support as well as they will don the Hockey Fights Cancer tie during the game. coach Jon Cooper’s tie will also be auctioned off.
Lightning president Steve Griggs will present a $5,000 check from the NHL to the Pediatric Cancer Foundation during the first period. Another Tampa team will be involved as Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Chris Archer will serve as the social captain for the game. Archer will wear a lavender jersey which he will sign to be given away during a social media contest.
It’s shaping up to be a great night of hope and awareness at Amalie Arena. Hockey Fights Cancer is a fantastic program that has helped to raise more than $14 million to date for local and national cancer research institutions, children’s hospitals, player charities, and local cancer organizations.
