Lightning & Penguins Preseason Game Part of Slap Shot Doubleheader

.

As part of this year’s Kraft Hockeyville celebration, Johnstown, PA earned the distinction of hosting an NHL preseason game. Next Tuesday, the Pittsburgh Penguins will host the Tampa Bay Lightning at the Cambria County War Memorial Arena. It will be NBCSN’s first hockey broadcast of the season and the location of the game has provided a fantastic theme for the evening.

The Cambria County War Memorial is well known to many hockey fans even if they’ve never visited Johnstown. The rink served as home ice for the Charlestown Chiefs in legendary hockey movie Slap Shot. When the Lightning and Penguins game concludes NBCSN will air a special showing of the classic film.

Pregame coverage begins at 7 pm with puck drop at 7:30. Some of the highlights of the broadcast will include:

  • Bob Costas will anchor the coverage. He got his start in broadcasting in Johnstown in 1973. Costas began his career as the play-by-play voice of the Syracuse Blazers of the North American Hockey League and called his game at Cambria County War Memorial.
  • An interview with the Hanson Brothers.
  • Doc Emrick pays homage to legendary Charlestown Chiefs broadcaster Jim Carr.
  • Current NHL players discussing their favorite scenes from the flick.

If you’ve never seen Slap Shot, make sure stay tuned after the game. It’s a classic for a reason and ever so quotable. Here’s a taste of what you can expect from the movie:
