Lightning World Junior Championship Update

Reggie Wayne Thomas J_ Russo-USA TODAY Sports

The 2015 IIHF World Junior Championship got underway in Toronto and Montreal on December 26th. The Tampa Bay Lightning have become known for their drafting prowess since Steve Yzerman became GM and the World Juniors are a great opportunity to see how some of the franchise’s top prospects match up against other talent. The Bolts have three players participating in their tournament and we wanted to keep you up to date on how they’re doing.

Brayden Point – Canada

Team Canada is off to a predictably dominant start. Their first game was an 8-0 steamrolling of Slovakia. 2014 Lightning draft pick center Brayden Point scored Canada’s fifth goal of the contest and registered an assist. Saturday saw another solid outing as the Canadians earned a 4-0 victory over Germany. They’ll face last year’s champions Finland on December 29th and then the United States on Wednesday December 31st.

Anthony DeAngelo – United States

2014 first round draft pick Anthony DeAngelo is part of the defensive corps for Team USA at the WJC. Their first game against Finland was a closely contested affair. Finland’s Mikko Rantanen scored the opening goal in the first period. DeAngelo registered an assist on Alex Tuch‘s tying goal. The game remained a goaltender’s battle through the rest of regulation before the USA scored to secure the 2-1 OT win. Team USA had a rousing 6-0 victory against Germany Sunday night. DeAngelo was kept off the scorecard but he did see significant time on the power play. Their next game comes on December 29th against Slovakia.

Dominik Masin – Czech Republic

Defenseman Dominik Masin was also drafted in the second round this summer. Fans who attended July’s Development Camp got to see a little of Masin. Unfortunately the Czech Republic is off to a rough start in the tournament. They have played and lost twice. Thursday’s game was a 5-2 loss to Sweden while Saturday was a 5-2 loss to Switzerland. Through two games Masin has one SOG and is a -1. The Czechs will take on Denmark on the 29th in their next match up.
