Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman Keith Aulie hosted the “Hockey & Hearts Celebrity Golf Tournament” to raise money for local Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan charities for a third consecutive year.
Over the past two years, the tournament has raised $140,000 and this year’s goal is $100,000.
Hockey & Hearts was established to bring together the big hearts of the local community along with sport celebrities. The money that is raised goes towards the long tem sustainability and renovations of the Rouleau Memorial Rink.
“We are doing a major renovation. We have completed the first phase and we are into the second phase now,” said Keith’s mom, Karen. “Our goal going forward is that we finish off the rink renovations and we will look at other projects in the community and other charities. We just want to keep on giving back to the surrounding area.”
The tournament also raises funds for the Mandi Schwartz Memorial Bursary at the Athol Murray College of Notre Dame. Schwartz was a hockey player that grew up in Wilcox and was recruited by Yale University. She was diagnosed with cancer after one semester. She lost her battle, but has continued to inspire many young athletes. The event also allows the committee to contribute to other local charities and families.
