Sources say that Reggie Bush will be stripped of his 2005 Heisman trophy because he “accepted improper benefits while at USC,” making him ineligible for that season. While the NCAA has handed down plenty of violations and stripped schools of wins and various championships, this is only the second instance in my lifetime that the organization has tried to alter our collective memories, Men In Black style.
19 years ago, five college freshman changed basketball forever. The NCAA has no record of this. All their accolades and banners are locked up in a warehouse somewhere near Ann Arbor, MI. Despite all this, their names are never forgotten.
If they ever tell my story let them say that I walked with giants. Men rise and fall like the winter wheat, but these names will never die. Let them say I lived in the time of Hector, tamer of horses. Let them say I lived in the time of Achilles.
Trojan horse puns aside, Reggie Bush is in a similar situation. Even if the NCAA decides that his season didn’t happen, no one will forget the memories that Bush gave us during his incredible season.
