It has been known for a long time that Tony Gwynn, Jr. was probably never going to be the starting center fielder for the parent club, and that he’d love to play for his father’s team, the San Diego Padres. Deals have been rumored over the years, and early Thursday, Brewers’ GM Doug Melvin finally unloaded the aging and struggling Gwynn, that cleared waivers earlier this season.
But for Jody Gerut?
This move makes absolutely no sense…Gerut is older, slower, and an even worse hitter than Gwynn. Gerut, 31 is batting .227 this season, and will likely go to AAA unless the Brewers send Mat Gamel or Chris Duffy to Nashville.
Gwynn at least held some promise of replacing Mike Cameron in case he became injured, or even next year. Sure progress has been slow, and the organization has more promising centerfielder prospects in the pipeline, mainly Lorenzo Cain.
The move is great for Gwynn, however…just a very bad move for the Brewers. Doug, what the hell were you thinking? Were you thinking?
