He wasn’t a Captain yesterday, but Lions TE Tony Scheffler was able to put the Tampa Bay Buccaneers away with a swashbuckling celebration after his 11-yard touchdown reception. The Lions won a 27-20 contest that wasn’t as close as the score indicates. (Side note: I’m done with the puns. That was horrible)
OK, so Scheffler wasn’t the whole story. The Lions defense came to play, stifling the Tampa Bay offense all game long. They only gave up one touchdown, and it was with less than 2 mintues to play. Matthew Stafford threw for 300+ yards and 3 touchdowns, so it’s easy to overlook his interception that Aqib Talib took back for a touchdown (it went off Scheffler’s hands anyway). Calvin Johnson was Calvin Johnson, plain and simple. The running game was one of the few aspects that still looked very Lions-esque, but it was effective enough to keep the ball for over 36 minutes of game time.
As for the touchdown dance, it’s no Carlton Banks (a la Alphonso Smith), but it’s a lot better than the rightly-flagged performance he gave fans in the preseason. If the Kansas City Chiefs play anything like they did this week, we might be celebrating another entertaining touchdown dance next Sunday.
