Lions did what they are pretty good at — showed signs of life and then pulled the plug as if playing well would be too painful. Tied with the Bears 21-21 heading into the locker rooms, the Lions were outscored 27-3 in the second half thanks in large part to pathetic special teams and turnovers in their own territory, not giving their already suspect defense a prayer.
The big story of the game though isn’t that the Lions lost, because let’s get real, we’re used to that, but the injury that Matthew Stafford suffered late in the fourth quarter. On a third down play, Stafford appeared to twist his right knee in what looked to be a scary fall.
According to Pro Football Talk, it doesn’t appear all that serious, but we won’t know for sure until after the MRI on Monday:
Per Jay Glazer of FOX, Stafford suffered a kneecap subluxation, which is fancy doctor talk for “it popped out of joint and popped back in.”
On the surface, all should be fine. But there’s a chance that the process of popping the knee out and in might have damaged some of the stuff in the vicinity.
An MRI will be conducted Monday to determine whether anything was indeed messed up inside the knee.
The last thing this Lions franchise needs is a significant knee injury to their prized rookie. Hopefully this injury is not that serious and Stafford can return after missing minimal time. I’ll wear my Stafford jersey tee for days on end until he’s back on the field leading the Lions on 98 yard drives.
