The Detroit Lions orchestrated yet another off-season trade today, acquiring TE Tony Scheffler and a 7th round pick from Denver. The trade, which was a three team affair, saw the Lions ship LB Ernie Sims to Philadelphia. The Eagles in turn sent a 5th round pick to the Broncos, who were the only team not to acquire a player in the deal.
Sims, who missed five games last season, went from a career best 134 tackle season in 2007, to just 49 in 2009.
Scheffler’s offensive output in 2009 closely resembled that of Lions rookie, Brandon Pettigrew, even though the first year tight end played four fewer games. Pettigrew suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament on Thanksgiving Day, which leaves some Detroit fans (and apparently bored ESPN staffers) to ponder whether he has fully recovered from his injury.
