Earlier today, Michael Lombardi posted a story at NFL.com discussing a variety of summer topics pertinent to football. At the very end of his story he dropped in this little gem:
There is some concern Colts safety Bob Sanders might never be able to play football again, with his shoulder and bicep issues. He reduced his contract, but his rehab has been slow.
The problem with this statement is that it goes against everything else that fans have been hearing about Bob Sanders this summer. First, that he is healthier at this point in the season than he possibly has ever been since he started his NFL career. Second, is that the team and Sanders are both confident that he will be ready to go for training camp and — absent any setbacks — should be ready to play at the beginning of the season.
Sanders’ agent Tom Condon responded to Lombardi’s statements, discrediting them both, in an article with Phil Richards of the Indy Star. Condon said that no changes were made to Sanders’ contract and that nothing affecting Sanders’ health has come up over the summer.
Richards quoted a team spokesman as saying, “Nothing has changed since June.” It is odd that Lombardi would move forward with a statement that was not confirmed by the team or Sanders’ agent. In fact, it was odd that the comment was included in Lombardi’s piece at all.
The good news for Colts fans is that there is no need to panic. It seems that Lombardi was just checking to see if Indianapolis was awake. I look forward to seeing Sanders’ progress as he prepares for the regular season.
