Looking Ahead, 2011 and Beyond…

Hello Coug fans,

I think its best that we all just forget yesterday even happened and move on. What better way to do that then to look at the future rather than dwell on the (embarassing) present. With that I bring you a scouting report on 6’9″ Cougar commit Patrick Simon from loyal reader and Rec League legend, Disco Stewey.

Take it away, Disco Stewey –

Patrick Simon’s line Ephrata vs. Selah (tied for the league lead): 27 points, 12 rebounds, 6 assists, 4 blocks.

Observations:

  • Simon looks all of his 6’9″ and 200+ pounds, a full head taller than any other player on the court. Furthermore, he is not overly skinny like a lot of high schoolers his height, but has plenty of room on his frame to add some more bulk.
  • He looks to be fairly athletic though there were no “wow” moments to point to. He only got above the rim once on a big shot block attempt.
  • He has a sweet, and I do mean SWEET shooting stroke. He connected on 5 of 12 three pointers, and all but one looked good off the release. He also had a few pull-ups off the dribble, showing a good mid-range game, but mostly worked off screens. He had a couple put backs inside as well, but worked almost exclusively on the perimeter on offense. He was able to get a shot off whenever, and wherever he wanted. He did not drive the basket at all, but Selah employed a zone D the entire game.
  • He played the entire game and despite being able to do just about anything he wanted, he did not try and take over completely. He seemed content to work within the flow of the game, allowing his teammates, some of whom are pretty good themselves, to stay invovled. He did not force anything.
  • Overall, he was too much for the Selah players to handle and he could have done a lot more, but he is on a good team and does not have any pressure on him to do everything. His line in this game seems pretty consistant with his other lines I’ve seen in the paper. Once he has his chance with the Cougs and gets up-to-speed with the college game there is some real potential, possibly after a red shirt year.

Thanks, Disco Stewey!

Its great to hear that he stands apart from the kids he’s up against at the high school level. That is just the bare minimum for a Pac-10 prospect. I’m also excited about his size and shooting ability. Sounds “as advertised”. I’m not sure he’ll ever red shirt, since Bone made a point of burning everyone’s red shirt right away this season. We also need big bodies so another 6’9″ could help us out right away if he’s at all ready.

If anyone else out there has had a chance to see Patrick Simon play, let us know your thoughts!
