Looking Back: 4th And 26

Philadelphia- With the Hall of Fame inducting the new class this weekend in Canton. I can’t help but think back to the game in involving this year’s class headline inductee, Brett Farve, that occurred on a cold Sunday in January of 2004. It was an Divisional Playoff game in which the Packers were leading late in the fourth quarter and had momentum in their favor. The Eagles were facing a 4th down and 26 to go to keep the drive and possibly their season alive.

The play that the birds called was 74 Double Go and when McNabb dropped back in the pocket he saw the Packers were in a Cover 2,  the linebacker bit on the tight end and the defensive back was playing past the yard marker. He rifled a pass to one of the most under performing receivers in Bird’s history, Freddie Mitchell. He was brought down after gaining 28 yards to the Green Bay 46 and gave a first down sign before the legendary official, Ed Hochuli, could.

The Birds would gain another first down and kick a tying field goal to send the game to Overtime. In the extra session, Favre threw up a lame duck pass that was intercepted by Brian Dawkins and returned 30 plus yards that set up the game winning field goal that sent the Eagles to the NFC Title Game.

This was the first and only time I ever saw Favre play in person. While a great of the game, I was ecstatic to see him lose on that day.

And who knew Freddie Mitchell, along with Favre’s only mistake in the game would send the Eagles to the NFC Title Game.
