Lorbek spurns Spurs, will re-sign with Barcelona

As we reported early Sunday morning, a report surfaced that Slovenian forward Erazem Lorbek had ELagreed to re-sign with his current Spanish team Regal Barcelona. Now according to Mundo Deportivo, the report has been confirmed as Lorbek has agreed to sign a multi-year deal with Regal.

It’s presumably the biggest deal in Regal history, but according to the report, Lorbek was actually offered more money to sign with CSKA Moscow.

Lorbek also had the opportunity to take his game to the highest level by waiting to see if the San Antonio Spurs would look into bringing him over, but ultimately, it came down to family, the big contract with Regal, and the legacy he’s built in Spain that kept the 28-year old back in Barcelona.

The report states Lorbek just had a new home built in Spain and his family was already comfortable there. He just won the Liga title this past season and is the cornerstone of their franchise. With Lorbek being 28, and he’s reported to be signing a 2-3 year deal, it seems unlikely that he’ll ever make his way to the NBA in the future.

As was discussed yesterday, the Spurs now lose out on a potential big man, though Lorbek wasn’t ideally fitting what they were looking for in their next frontcourt player. The Spurs will continue to work in their efforts to re-sign Tim Duncan, and proceed with their own free agents stateside, though, Nando De Colo could still be one European brought over from France.
