Los Angeles Rams Helping or Hurting Jared Goff by Lack of Competition?

The Los Angeles Rams are putting all their eggs in Jared Goff’s basket.

The move isn’t necessarily surprising, giving the price the Rams paid to move up to take the quarterback out of California with the NFL’s No. 1 overall draft pick last season.

But is it prudent?

Because of the depth, or lack thereof, behind Goff currently at the quarterback position, Yahoo.com surmises that puts even more pressure on the second-year player to become the franchise player the team is expecting.

Those backups are household no-names Sean Mannion, a third-year QB out of Oregon State, and Aaron Murray, a fourth-year journeyman out of Georgia. That’s not the most formidable trio in the league, Yahoo.com reports:

The number two guy on the depth chart is incidental in New England, Pittsburgh, Green Bay, etc. Brady, Roethlisberger, and Rodgers are mortal locks in their respective cities. Goff deserves the opportunity to get it right this coming season, but what happens if injury or absolute abysmal play sidelines the 2017 incumbent?

Having the M&M Boys (Mannion & Murray) serving as one and two on the depth chart makes the need for Jared Goff to succeed only that much more critical.

It also means the margin for error is razor thin.

Goff participated in an offseason session with QB coaches Tom House and Adam Dedeaux. They have worked with some other big names in the league, such as Tom Brady and Drew Brees.

Goff’s efforts to improve should give the Rams some piece of mind that he is committed to becoming the quarterback they expect.

But during OTAs and training camp, Goff won’t have the benefit of a veteran quarterback who can help him adapt, unless L.A. picks up one of the available vets in the offseason.

Players such as Colin Kaepernick, Tony Romo, Robert Griffin III and former Ram Ryan Fitzpatrick currently are without teams.

Is it wise for Goff to go into 2017 knowing that he has virtually no competition for the starting job?
