While Jared Goff learns his second scheme in two seasons, Los Angeles Rams coach Sean McVay knows what his second-year quarterback has to learn first.
Rams general manager Les Snead talked about Goff’s progression with NFL Network’s Steve Wyche and revealed what McVay has preached as the underlying factor in Goff’s development (h/t turfshowtimes.com):
If he had one priority for Jared, it’s this. Sean, coming from his background, really wants the quarterback to understand protections. Because at that point, during the course of a game he should know where his protections are weak and strong, and know, ‘Uh oh, we’ve got a problem coming—but the offense has a built-in answer and I’ve got to get to that answer real quick.’ And I think that would be progress of where Sean would want Jared to get.
Goff clearly had problems with protections last season behind a porous offensive line. The rookie out of Cal completed just 54.6 percent of his passes, which would’ve ranked just ahead of Carolina’s Cam Newton had Goff played the whole season rather than seven games.
His 3.71 sacks per game (26 in seven) also would’ve ranked next to last—Cleveland quarterbacks combined to get sacked an average of 4.13 times, according to sportingcharts.com. Goff also threw seven interceptions in seven games, which would have ranked him among the league leaders in that category as well.
The Rams took a major step in stepping up the protection for Goff in the form of new left tackle Andrew Whitworth, but until Goff’s pocket presence increases dramatically, the Rams offense will continue to struggle.
