Lots of Safeties

The Colts are loaded

“There will be enough opportunities for (Bullitt), no question about that,” coach Jim Caldwell said. “Depending on the scheme, we could use all three of them at the same time.”

When not working with the base defense during camp, Bullitt has been used in a few specialty packages with Sanders and Bethea. The Colts’ nickel uses five defensive backs; their dime uses a sixth.

Occasionally, Bullitt lines up and covers a slot receiver. Other times, he bounces around closer to the line of scrimmage similar to a linebacker. Maybe he finds a hole and blitzes. Maybe he drops back into coverage.

“It’s really just getting the best guys on the field at the same time for the situation,” Bullitt said. “It’s still early and we’re working on the basic stuff.
