Tom Haudricourt of JSOnline is reporting that Luis Gonzalez would love to play for the Milwaukee Brewers in 2008. Gonzalez would fill the current void in left field after Geoff Jenkins departure.
Gonzalez is not nearly the player now as he was that hit 57 home runs and drove in 142 for the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2001. He was good for 15 homers and 68 RBI last season for the Dodgers. That’s not super production but super production isn’t what the Brewers are looking for. His .369 career OBP and is 1-1 walk to strikeout ratio is something the Brewers could desperately use.
Gonzalez made $7.35 million last year in Los Angeles, but his agent said that Gonzo isn’t looking to break the bank in ’08 and the Brewers could probably get him for an incentive-laden deal totally around a couple million.
I think this would be a great move for the Crew to make. You get Gonzalez giving you stability in left field and playoff experience. You also get him for one year at a reasonable price. That will still leave room for Matt LaPorta to take over everyday in 2009. It will also keep Gabe Gross as a bench player-the role in which he is best suited for.
