Lundqvist Wouldn’t Have Problem With Gay Teammate

Dave Lozo at NHL.com reports on Henrik Lundqvist’s support of the You Can Play Project, an initiative designed to teach tolerance and acceptance of the LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender) community in all sports.

Here’s Lundqvist on the project…

“For me, it’s obvious that everyone should have the same rights and ability to play the game, it doesn’t matter race or sexual orientation,” Lundqvist told NHL.com Tuesday morning. “To me, I think overall, all the hockey players I meet are a respectful group of people. I’ve never had an issue with it or seen people have issues with it. But when they asked me, if they wanted my help, I would.”

On whether it would be a problem with the Rangers if one if his teammates came out, Lundqvist added…

“Absolutely not.”

…when a player of Lundqvist’s stature comes out on the side of tolerance and acceptance of homosexuality, it’s not only a good day for the gay community but for the United States as a whole.

Last year Sean Avery, who has lobbied in favor of gay marriage, stated he would support a gay teammate.
