Mike Gesicki hopes to become Penn State’s first Mackey Award winner

A day after Saquon Barkley, Chris Godwin and Jason Cabinda landed on watch lists released by the Maxwell Football Club, Penn State tight end Mike Gesicki joined in the summer watch list fun by being named to the Mackey Award watch list. Gesicki is one of 13 juniors to be named to the watch list a year after recording 13 catches for 125 yards and a touchdown. Gesicki may not have much to rely on in the stats department, but he is expected to be a top tight end for the Nittany Lions this fall and perhaps this is an indication of the expectations being placed upon him this fall.

Penn State has never had a player win the Mackey Award. Kyle Brady probably would have won the award in 1994 had it existed, but the Mackey Award was presented for the first time in the 2000 season to Purdue’s Tim Stratton. Last year’s award went to Hunter Henry of Arkansas, making the Razorbacks the first program with multiple Mackey Award winners.

The Mackey Award winner will be announced on December 7, 2016 and honored the next day during The Home Depot College Football Awards Red Carpet Show on ESPNU.

The watch list for the Rimington Trophy (best center) was also released on Wednesday, but nobody from Penn State was listed. A.Q. Shipley is Penn State’s only Rimington Trophy winner in program history, taking the honor in 2008.
