Mailbag questions for 7/15 – Pierre Warren Special!

aa3

As always, thank you for taking the time to submit questions. I appreciate the interest very much. Saints Nation only exists because we have an opportunity to interact with each other and talk Saints. Here’s what you sent me this week:

//platform.twitter.com/widgets.jsOh man. Really coming with the heat on this one. I would say it depends on the wood. Are we talking Oak, Sequoia, what? If we’re talking the small Cedar in my yard they could probably chuck more of it. Your question needs more specificity. As far as Goodell, he suspends you 3 Saints games for the question. That means you can’t watch. If he finds out you watch anyway, lifetime ban. You’re allowed to go the Superdome blindfolded, though.

I’m going to say Dannell Ellerbe and Stephone Anthony. David Hawthorne obviously being the odd man out. I sure hope Anthony is a starter… if he’s not and the Saints whiff on that pick, we have a problem.

//platform.twitter.com/widgets.jsGreat? I’m not sure about that. Will he be a major improvement? Undoubtedly. I think he’s going to get awful tickety tacky flags that will sometimes make you rage on the ref, and sometimes rage on him. He will get frustrating flags on 3rd and 11 that will give the opponent an automatic 1st down and it’s going to burn. That’s the reality of his game. But you’ll enjoy his physicality and the punishment he’ll lay on these big receivers. I think like any player that is physical you’ll take the bad with the good. But it’ll be more good than bad.

I disagree with that claim but I completely understand why you’re asking. Warren was the team’s best playmaker. Unfortunately, he showed issues at times in run support, tackling angles, tackling technique and last line defense. Sometimes we as fans fall in love with the guy that’s flashy even if he makes mistakes, but I can promise you coaches much prefer the trustworthy player that has less flash. Jason David is an example of that, although the seem to notice a corner’s mistakes more than a safety’s. What it really comes down to with Warren is he needs to show he can be a good special teams player because his tackling has been spotty in the past and his angles need work. And if you’re not going to make the team as a starter (he’s not unseating Jairus Byrd and Rafael Bush) then he needs to beat out guys like Jalen Saunders, Marcus Murphy, Vinnie Sunseri, Jamarca Sanford for a special teams spot. That’s why Warren will be challenged to make the team. I’m not ruling him out though.

//platform.twitter.com/widgets.jsI’ll say 9-7. The Saints are deeper but they still have some holes. Hopefully some of these young guys make an impact early. I think they’ll be competitive in the NFC South and in the mix for a playoff spot but they won’t be dominant.

More Pierre Warren! He’s a popular guy today. I think he has a decent shot. But he’s going to have to improve his special teams ability. Safety is crowded when you consider that Byrd, Vaccaro and Bush are locks. Sanford replaced Vaccaro as the starter and he’s a good special teamer, Sunseri is a gamer on special teams, and Kenny Phillips is making a comeback. My guess is they probably keep 5 safeties and I just named six. Warren is the seventh guy and there’s a lot of competition. I think his best shot is if Phillips looks old and Sanford isn’t needed because Vaccaro looks much improved.

Is this like a jeopardy thing? Is this another Pierre Warren question? I’m going to guess the question is: what is the number of the player who led the Saints in interception return yards in 2014?
