Make Sports Fun Again: Competitiveness

In every sport, there are bound to be some teams that will be towards the bottom of the barrel. The Cleveland Browns, the Jaguars, and the Knicks have been very low for quite a while. In most cases, opposing teams see them on the schedule and chalk up a win. More often than not, these games are blowouts and not very interesting to watch. In order to make the various leagues more enjoyable, the men in charge should look to put competitiveness at the forefront.

Understandably, this isn’t the easiest thing to accomplish. But in some leagues it seems like it has been this way for a while. The Patriots have been at the top for most of the 2000’s. This would normally be a problem, but other teams have risen and fallen in the same amount of time. Teams like the Saints, the Colts, the Broncos, and the Panthers have seen their share of ups and downs. However in the NBA, there are teams that have been bad for a long time, and it doesn’t seem like it will be changing anytime soon.

The past two years have featured the same two teams in the finals with Golden State and Cleveland. Meanwhile, the 76ers have finished in the bottom 3 the same past two years. How can this change? In the NBA especially, the league is dominated by super teams and occasional outliers. There was the era of the Big 3 in Boston, then the Big 3 in Miami, and then the super team that is Golden State. In a game where one player switching teams can flip the script, is there a logical way to change this culture?

Unfortunately, this is an impossible task. It would require the league to lower salary caps for teams. All that would do is make every team worse. With less wealth to share, teams would look for cheaper players in hopes to coach them to greatness. There would be some major growing pains, something that the fans wouldn’t want to see. So this is what we are stuck with. High powered teams against the bottom of the barrel. But things are looking up.

Philly is finally competitive! Not only this, but there are plenty of teams that have started to show promise. The Rockets and James Harden are putting together an impressive season that could challenge Golden State. In the East, the Celtics and Isaiah Thomas are at their highest ranking since the Big 3 was here. With more talent coming into the league, and players of Lebron’s era getting older, teams that were once powerhouses might have a hard time hanging on to those standings. Unless you’re the Spurs. They will never be bad, let’s be honest.
