Contract negotiations between agents and teams can be contentious from the start, and slowly deteriorate. Mutual respect keeps them on track.
“If you really do feel that the guy on the other side of the table wants to get a solution rather than say, ‘This is it, take it or leave it,’ then you really have a chance,” Peterson said. “Tom understands there has to be give-and-take.
“From college free agents to low-round picks to No. 1 draft choices, we certainly had our differences. We agreed to disagree, then we found solutions.”
Colts president Bill Polian agreed.
“There’s no question there is mutual respect and Tom Condon’s word is his bond,” Polian said. “You know negotiations are going to be tough, but in the end, if there is a level of trust — and there certainly is on my part with him — you at least have taken one step down the road towards successful completion because of that.
