Maple Leafs 4, Rangers 2

-4

The New York Rangers (15-6-3) lost to the Toronto Maple Leafs (15-10-2) by the score of 4-2, tonight. For a boxscore and recap go to Yahoo! Sports.

…listen, the Rangers can’t win every game, so I’m not going to kill them for struggling with another speed team. But give the team credit for finding their game in the second period and making a real run at tying it up.

…i ripped Torts for Avery’s lack of ice time last game, so I’ve got to give him props tonight for giving the fourth line increased ice time once the Rangers went down 3-0 and he got the spark he was looking for as they changed the momentum of the game with some hard-nosed shifts and got the Blueshirts back into the game.

…tough hit on Sauer by Phaneuf, but a legal one. Still would have liked to see someone jump Mr. Sloppy Seconds.

…so apparently Stepan is so good he doesn’t need to look when he’s passing anymore. Ridiculous assist on Gaborik goal.

…sometimes you have to tip your cap to the opposing goaltender. You know Gustavsson gets amped up to play against fellow countryman and hero Lundqvist.

…Anisimov continues to blossom in front of our eyes with another strong effort, which included seven shots on goal.

…probably least effective game for Hagelin-Boyle-Mitchell line. Hagelin’s speed is still fun to watch though.

…second time in a week Feds-Richards-Cally line combines for a -5.

…Prust having to take on Rosehill is why there is still a spot on the Blueshirts for Rupp.

…so that’s what a 5-on-3 goal looks like. Power play goal in five out of six games.

…as usual Lundqvist gave Rangers a chance.

…seven hits from Del Zotto tonight. Needs to get that final shot on net.

…while I loved the home whites, no way the Rangers should have changed it up in the middle of a seven game home winning streak.

…btw, great seeing Vanbiesbrouck back at the Garden.

…off until Thursday when the Lightning come to town.

QUOTES (via Blueshirts United)…

Ryan Callahan…

“Against any team in this league if you get down 3-0 it’s going to be a hard game to fight back in and win or tie up. Obviously I think that had a big part to do in (the Rangers losing). I feel like we had our chance sin the third (period), but it was a matter of converting on them and putting them in the back of the net. Tonight we didn’t do that. We shouldn’t have put ourselves in the hole we did, but we were right there at the end.”

Brian Boyle…

“(Jonas Gustavsson) was really good, and he made some big saves at the end. It was frustrating for me because I had a chance to score on the power play there (late in the third), but he made the save—and then a couple more. Those things will happen, I guess, but still you don’t want to say OK, shrug your shoulders. Losing stinks, no matter what.”

Michael Del Zotto…

“We know they are a quick team, but for whatever reason, we weren’t ready for it in the first (period). It was a good comeback for us, showed a lot of character as a team, but it wasn’t enough.”
