Starting off in Springfield, this week, the Falcons traveled to Worchester for a game with the baby Sharks. Andrew Joudrey opened the scoring with his 11th goal of the season 3:27 into the first. He tipped in a Carter Camper pass to make it 1-0. The Falcons allowed two second period goals before Dana Tyrell struck 22 seconds into the third period to tie it when he gathered a loose puck and snapped a shot past the Sharks goalie. Four minutes later, the Falcons scored on kind of a goofy play when Cody Goloubef passed to Michael Chaput who couldn’t corral the puck but Sean Collins did. He then passed to Jean Francois Jacques who sent a cross-crease pass to Matt Taormina who made it 3-1. Later in the period, Sean Collins scored when he got the puck from a board battle before making it 4-2 on his 13th goal of the season. Mike McKenna made 30 saves in the win for his 20th of the season.
Up next was a big one as the Falcons faced off against the Manchester Monarchs in a battle of the top two teams in the Eastern Conference. In the second period, with the Falcons trailing 1-0, Denny Urban sent a shot through a screen to make it 1-1. Late in the third, with the Falcons trailing 4-1, Andrew Joudrey won a faceoff and Dana Tyrell drove to the net to score his 13th of the season. Mike McKenna made 18 saves in the 4-2 loss with the team allowing an empty net goal.
To close out the weekend, the Falcons welcomed the St. John’s IceCaps. It was a wild one, with the Caps taking a 3-0 lead into the first intermission. But then early in the second period, Patrick McNeill scored his first goal of the game to make it 3-1. 1:10 later St. John’s struck again to make it 4-1. Later in the second Michael Chaput scored his 18th goal of the season to make it 4-2. Early in the third Patrick McNeill potted his second of the game on the power play, and Ryan Craig scored his 15th goal to tie the game at four. Sadly, the Falcons allowed the IceCaps to score with only 1:19 remaining to lose by a score of 5-4. Jeremy Smith made 19 saves in the loss.
Marko Dano arrived in Springfield and was signed to an AHL contract since his NHL entry level contract doesn’t kick in until next season – I’m guessing Marko makes it into a game next weekend if not the Falcons game on Wednesday. I believe his appearance will wait for the weekend so the team can have him participate in a few practices.
Martin Ouellette-Maine Black Bears (Hockey East)
Final Regular Season Stats 34GP 15-15-4 .925Sv% 2.29GAA 4SO 0-2-2
Final Career Stats 82GP 28-33-14 .913Sv% 2.52GAA 8SO 0-5-5
Quickly some hardware updates – due to his 29 save shutout of Merrimack in their one game playoff Martin was named the Hockey East Defensive Player of the week for the third time this season. It was the first time he didn’t share the award with another player. Here’s an article about first year Black Bears coach Red Gendron’s confidence in Martin. Last week, Martin and the Black Bears faced the Providence College Friars with the Friars picking up a sweep. On Friday night Martin had 29 saves in game one which resulted in a 3-1 loss. Saturday, in game two, Martin was pulled in the second period after allowing three goals on 14 shots. Dan Sullivan went in but it appears from the gamesheet that Martin re-entered the game and stopped all four Friars shots in the third period. Martin made 18 saves in the loss giving him 926 on the season which sets a new Maine record for saves in a season.
Quickly if you need something cute to brighten your day here’s Providence coach Nate Leaman holding his postgame press conference while holding his infant child. By going off the Maine media guide from before the season, it appears Martin’s season will appear among the top 10 all time. Martin’s 34 games played ties Lightning goalie Ben Bishop who played 34 games in two different seasons. His .925 save percentage is second all-time for a season and his 2.29 GAA is 10th all-time for a season. As for his career, his .913 save percentage is third all-time and his 2.52 GAA is fifth all-time. I’m not sure if there’s a certain amount of time that needed to be played regarding these measures – Martin played very sparingly his freshman and sophomore seasons playing in only 18 games.
Mike Reilly, Seth Ambroz-Minnesota Golden Gophers (Big 10)
Season Stats MR: 37GP 8-21-29 +21 16PIM SA: 37GP 13-8-21 +7 22PIM
Much like Martin we start this recap with some awards. With his four point weekend against OSU, Mike was named the Big 10’s third star of the week earning his first three stars award. Up next was a weekend series with Michigan. Mike was the only prospect to pick up a point in Friday night’s 3-2 win when he took a pass from Nate Condon and found Justin Kloos who was off to the races. That goal made it 2-2. In a 3-2 overtime win, Mike almost won it for the Gophers going by the highlights.
Up next in the rematch, Seth was the prospect picking up the only point but in a 6-2 loss to the Wolverines. The Gophers sat starter and Hobey Baker finalist Adam Wilcox for little used senior goalie Mike Shibrowski and it would show as the Wolverines rolled out to a 5-0 lead before the Gophers finally got something going. Seth picked up an assist on Brady Skjei’s late second period goal that made it 5-1 Wolverines.
Before the Big 10 tournament got underway the league handed out its awards and Mike was named the Big 10’s Defensive Player of the Year. He was also named first team all conference. The Gophers earned a bye in the Big 10 tournament and played Ohio State. The Buckeyes surprised in a 3-1 victory on their run to championship game in which they lost to Wisconsin. Mike and Seth were held pointless in the loss. Up next for the Gopher boys will be a game against the Robert Morris Colonials who are in the NCAA Tournament because of the Atlantic Hockey’s automatic bid. This is the NCAA hockey’s tournament’s equivalent to a 1-16 matchup in the basketball tournament as Minnesota is the tournament’s top seed.
TJ Tynan-Notre Dame Fighting Irish (Hockey East)
Season Stats 39GP 8-21-29 +14 28PIM
TJ and the Irish traveled to Boston for a three game series with Boston College. In a 7-2 game 1 victory, TJ picked up two assists which pushed him into 13th place in all time points and 10th all time in assists. In the first, with only nine seconds remaining, TJ took a drop pass from Thomas DiPauli and found Stephen Johns who had a wide open net to shoot at. Later in the third with the Irish leading 4-1, TJ took a shot that Thatcher Demko stopped but Bryan Rust would convert to make it 5-1 Irish. They would go on to win 7-2.
TJ was held pointless in a game 2 loss and a game 3 victory which moved his team on to the Hockey East Semifinals. In the semis, TJ – and all of his teammates for that matter – were held scoreless in a 4-0 loss to eventual champion UMass-Lowell.
Up next TJ and the Irish will travel to St. Paul, Minnesota for the West Regional where they will play St Cloud St in the 2-3 matchup. If they win they will take on the winner of Minnesota and Robert Morris so we could have a CBJ Prospect matchup in the Regional Final. The Irish faced the Huskies last year as the top seed in the Toledo Regional – a game in which the Huskies ran over the Irish winning by a score of 5-1.
Quickly Alexander Wennberg has been held pointless in all five of Frolunda’s first round games against Linkoping in which the Indians hold a 3-2 series lead.
Daniel Zaar-Rogle(Kval Till SHL)
Final PlayOff-Serien Stats 6GP 4-4-8 +3 0PIM Tied for second in Scoring
Kval Till SHL Stats 4GP 1-5-6 +3 0PIM Currently Leads series in scoring
Daniel and Rogle first finished up the PlayOff Serien for a chance to move on to play for a chance to move up to the SHL. First Daniel was held pointless in an overtime win over Karlskrona and a win over Mora. In their next game against Karlskoga, Daniel opened the scoring when he took a pass in the slot and fired a rocket to make it 1-0. Daniel also picked up an assist on Christopher Liljewell’s first of the game. Daniel was named third star in the 3-1 win.
Daniel was the star of the team’s final game scoring two goals and adding an assist. In the second period with Rogle trailing 3-1, Daniel picked up a loose puck and found Dennis Everberg in front who scored to make it 3-2. In the third period, Daniel scored his first of the game when he took a cross crease pass and tapped it past the goalie to tie the game. Daniel also scored the final goal with 51 seconds remaining to make it 5-3. Daniel was named first star in the win.
Daniel and Rogle then moved on to play in the Kval Till SHL and Daniel has been leading the charge for Rogle. Starting off against Orebro, Daniel helped give the team a 1-0 lead when, off a faceoff, he passed the puck to Niklas Hansson whose slapshot would make it 1-0. Later, with Rogle trailing 2-1, Daniel passed the puck to Eric Martinsson and fired a shot to tie it at two. Daniel picked up another assist when he sent a cross rink pass to Jakob Johansson whose shot was stopped with Dennis Everberg picking up the rebound to make it 3-2 Rogle in a 4-3 loss.
Up next was a game against Vasteras. Daniel had two assists in a 4-3 win. Daniel won a board battle and got the puck to Johannson who found Everberg in front to make it 1-0. Later in the first with Rogle leading 3-1, Daniel sent a cross-crease pass to Johansson whose shot was stopped but Christopher Liljewell scored to make it 4-1 in a 4-3 win. Next in a game against AIK, Daniel picked up an assist when, off a breakaway, he passed to Everberg who found Johansson in front to make it 1-0 Rogle. Rogle went on to win it 2-1 in a shootout. Daniel was held pointless in a 5-2 win over Malmo. Daniel currently leads the Kval Till SHL in scoring with one more game remaining before they play the second half of the series.
Markus Soberg-Frolunda J20
Final Season Stats:
J20 SuperElit Sodra 27 16 10 26 +10 28PIM
J20 SuperElit Top 10 18 5 7 12 +8 12PIM
J20 SM-slutspel 3 1 0 1 +1 6PIM
Markus is the latest prospect to have his season end after his team lost their final series in three games to Orebro. Markus scored a goal in a game 2 loss. After a successful first half in which he was among the league’s leaders scorers, Markus never really seemed to get back on track, even though no one was scoring in the playoffs. As for next year, Markus could return to the Little Indians as he just turns 19 in April.
There you have it folks – another week in the world of CBJ prospects. As for next week, I’ll have an update on the Falcons and we’ll update how Daniel and Alexander are doing in the playoffs.
