In preparation of the upcoming football season, let’s look back at one of the best Bearcats in recent memory, Mardy Gilyard. Mardy was the offensive leader for back to back Bearcats teams that made BCS bowls. Gilyard is currently on the St Louis Rams. Here are 3 of his best moments.
1. The kick return against Pittsburgh
Obviously the best moment for Mardy was when UC needed him the most. With the Bearcats down 31-10 just before the half against the Panthers, Gilyard busted a 99 yard kick return. It was the score Cincinnati needed to keep the game in check. Gilyard had the only score of the 3rd quarter, a 68 yard TD catch, as well as 118 yards receiving that day. In the biggest game of UC history, Gilyard came up bigger.

2. Gilyard crashes into, and hugs child
Football is a violent sport. In a game against South Florida, Mardy Gilyard went flying over the wall on an incomplete pass, and crashed into a child. While many would simply walk way, Mardy picked the kid up and hugged him for a minute before returning to the field. It was a very nice moment, and it’s one of the moments you think of when you think of Mardy G.

The 2008 game against Pittsburgh was a huge one. The Bearcats were 2 games away from clinching their first Big East title. The Panthers were ranked 20, the Bearcats 19. The affair was tight until the 3rd quarter. That’s when Gilyard pulled in a 39 yard TD pass from Tony Pike to make the score 21-7, a lead that Cincinnati wouldn’t relinquish. Gilyard had 110 yards against Pittsburgh in that game. Mardy completely owned Pittsburgh his last two seasons.
