The Yankees have announced a press conference for today involving Mark Teixeira according to Ken Rosenthal.

The reason was later clarified by Buster Olney…

Mark Teixeira will retire at season’s end after a 13 year career. Tex has struggled this season posting a .198 batting average with 10 home runs and 27 RBIs.

Teixeira was taken with the #5 overall pick in the 2001 by the Texas Rangers. He would spend 5 years in Arlington before being traded to the Braves with Ron Mahay for Beau Jones (minors), Elvis Andrus, Neftali Feliz, Matt Harrison and Jarrod Saltalamacchia.

Tex would spend just over a year with the Braves before being shipped again, this time to the Angels for Stephen Marek (minors) and Casey Kotchman.

Tex would elect free agency after his short stint in Los Angeles. He would sign with the Yankees in January of 2009. That year, Teixiera would hit .292 with 39 home runs and 122 RBIs while winning both the Silver Slugger and Gold Glove award. The Annapolis, Maryland native would capture his one and only World Series title that year, defeating the Philadelphia Phillies.
