For all the Skelleftea hockey fans out there, my heart goes out to you because Bobby Butler, “who has scored wherever he’s been“, is not coming to an arena near you. Well, that is unless you’re a Swedish hockey fan who lives in Newark.
Just confirmed that
#Marlborough‘s Bobby Butler has agreed to 1-year, 2-way deal with Devils. Will sign it later today or tomorrow.— Dan Cagen (@DanCagen) August 9, 2012
Assuming this rumour is true, it reminds me of a quote from Butler’s agent, Neil Sheehy.
“You have to look at teams that are looking for extra forwards and where he fits. The team has to have a vision. We might believe the team has the right fit, but the team might not have the vision.”
(Using computer to look at New Jersey’s roster on Capgeek)
Hmmm…
Does Jersey have a need for forwards?
Check.
Where does Butler fit in?
He’s cheap and he plays forward. With an owner in Jeff Vanderbeek who is reportedly still $20 million short on his repayment to lenders, if Vanderbeek cannot pony up the rest of the cash by Aug. 14 than he may be forced to relinquish control of the NHL’s Eastern Conference Champions.
Playing in a state that’s renowned for gambling, Butler could prove to be a worthwhile roll of the dice, or not.
Ah well, thanks for the memories Bobby. You’ll always have those two hot stretches — from February 12th through February 26th and April 2nd through April 9th — in which you tallied a combined 8 goals and 15 points in 11 games played. Oh, there’s also that memorable goal in which you made Hal Gill look like a human traffic cone.
But about those other 81 games played in which you only tallied 8 goals and 22 points, yeah… we won’t be missing that production very much.
All the best!
