On Thursday, the Miami Marlins signaled their intentions on pursuing a playoff run, by acquiring San Diego Padres closer Fernando Rodney in exchange for pitching prospect Chris Paddack.

Rodney, 39, signed a one-year deal with a team option in San Diego and was in the middle of a terrific season that saw him register 17 saves and 0.31 ERA in 28 1/3 innings pitched. Rodney will slot into the bullpen behind incumbent closer AJ Ramos. Ramos has been stellar in his own right for the Marlins.
Paddack was in the midst of a stretch that saw him go 15 straight innings without allowing a hit in Low-A Greensboro. What may be more impressive is his 0.95 ERA in six starts with the team so far this year, along with 48 K’s and just 2 BB’s (!!). Paddack will add to a farm system that was depleted when they acquired players like Wil Myers and the Upton brothers.
The move gives the Miami bullpen another feared arm, joining Ramos, David Phelps and Kyle Barraclough among others. The price to get Rodney is a terrific young arm, who is really starting to find his game. The move makes sense for both teams, who now have a plan for the coming month and the trade deadline on July 31.
