Marlins should interview Juan Samuel, not Larry Bowa

The first day of baseball’s offseason, at least as far as the Phillies are concerned, is here. The Miami Marlins are getting started with finding a new manager and have been given permission to speak to one of the Phillies assistant coaches; Larry Bowa.

Jim Salisbury of CSN Philly reported the news about Bowa in the same report that says the Phillies have not renewed the contracts of hitting coach John Mizerock and bullpen coach Rod Nichols for 2016. Bowa, hitting coach Steve Henderson, first base coach Juan Samuel and pitching coach Bob McClure have all been offered extensions to be a part of Pete Mackanin‘s coaching staff next season. But could Bowa once again be the manager of his own club again?

I honestly do not see it. Bowa has managerial experience but the Marlins are not a situation Bowa needs to walk into at this point in his life. Bowa does not appear to be one of the top candidates for the job anyway, with the Marlins already having interviewed Manny Acta and Bo Porter. Salisbury notes Samuel would entertain the opportunity to interview for a manager position. Honestly, I think Samuel would be a much better fit in Miami than Bowa. Samuel would be a much better fit for the Marlins in terms of personality and baseball knowledge. The Marlins need someone who can establish solid relationships with the players, and Samuel has a much better track record with that than Bowa.

If I were the Malrins and I were to interview an assistant off the Phillies staff, Samuel is the one I’m calling.
