The Red Sox have designated Marlon Byrd for assignment to open a roster spot Dice-K today. Byrd was struggling at the plate and with Nava and Posednik producing there was no longer a need for him in Boston. The Red Sox traded Michael Bowden for Byrd earlier in the season. Bowden has also struggled; he has given up 9 earned runs in 12 innings with the Cubs.
