Nate Marquardt capitalized on a misguided protest by Rousimar Palhares to knock out the tough Brazilian in the main event at UFC Fight Night 22 this past Wednesday in Austin, TX. After Palhares tried to secure one of his patented ankle locks, Marquardt easily slid out of the hold. Palhares inexplicably took that moment to signal to referee Herb Dean that he believed Marquardt had greased his legs. Marquardt did what fighters do and continued with the action, lunging in and landing a vicious right hand that was followed with a flurry of punches to the prone Palhares to end the night. The official time of stoppage was 3:28 in the opening round. With the win Marquardt reestablishes himself as a viable contender in the UFC middleweight picture.
Televised Undercard
Charles Oliveria showed he has to tools to make a name for himself in the UFC with his complete domination of Efrain Escudero. After stifling most of Escudero’s attacks, Oliveria took the back of a standing Escudero and slipped in a rear naked choke to end the fight at the 2:25 mark in round two.
Jim Miller scored a three round unanimous decision over Glesion Tibau. Scores were 30-27, 30-27, 29-28.
Cole Miller looked impressive in submitting dangerous striker Ross Pearson with a rear naked choke in the second round. Time of submission was 1:49 in round two.
